PHA (Vic & Tas) congratulates Victoria's First Peoples' Assembly on Victoria's Treaty

On 13 November 2025, the first-ever treaty with First Nations people in Australia was signed and formalised as law in Victoria. The Professional Historians Association (Victoria & Tasmania) express support for Treaty and urges all Victorians to become fully informed of its significance and importance.

In 2021, the PHA (Vic & Tas) urged the Federal government to move forward with the recommendations from the Uluru Statement of the Heart. In 2023, the PHA (Vic & Tas) publicly supported the Voice Referendum. As professional historians, our members are acutely aware of the long history of Federal and State governments ignoring calls by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for self-determination, truth-telling telling and justice. While we acknowledge the rights of our members to have their own independent views on this matter, Treaty reflects the values and ethos of our association.

The PHA (Vic & Tas) wish to publicly congratulate Victoria's First Peoples' Assembly, Victorian Parliament and indeed generations of advocates and activists who contributed to this historic achievement.
