EMPLOYMENT SERVICE

For employers:

The PHA (Vic) Employment Service circulates information to over fifty accredited professional historians on a weekly or fortnightly basis. This service allows employers wishing to engage the services of an historian to publicise the job quickly and without cost among practising professional historians. In addition, the Employment Service can assist employers in the following ways.

PHA (Vic) can provide information and advice on a range of other matters free of charge. These include:.

  • advice regarding commissioning a history

  • a guide to preparing a brief

  • assistance checking briefs once prepared

  • advice regarding different types of publications (to suit a range of purposes and budgets)

  • a publishing check list

  • estimates of the probable length of time required for research and writing

  • a scale of fees and estimates of the probable costs of employing an historian

In some instances employers may require a greater level of involvement from the Association.  PHA (Vic) is happy to be involved in personal meetings, interview and/or steering panels and to offer more extensive publishing and contract advice on a consultancy basis.

For professional historians:

The PHA (Vic) Employment Service provides historians who are looking for work with convenient and up-to-date information on current employment positions, and takes a pro-active role in seeking new job opportunities for members. It promotes high professional standards and encourages adequate remuneration by supplying all employers with the ACPHA recommended scale of fees. In addition, PHA (Vic) can provide advice about professional indemnity and public liability insurance for historians.  A model contract and contract check list are also available to members through the Association.

Professional, Associate and Graduate members can subscribe to the Employment Service for $45 per year.

Retired members are not eligible for the Employment Service.
